In the Samoan culture, our names have deep meaning. When my mom was a child, my grandma had so much pride to share my mom’s full name, often receiving a response of pleasant surprise and honor but she never fully understood why. When moving to the States, her name was shortened in America to “Lia”, but her full name is, “Fetalaiga Atuu’u”. In 2023, my family traveled to our families' home villages, Masausi (American Samoa) and Lauli’i (Samoa) after being gone for over two decades.

I always admired my mom’s ability to defend others when they can’t find the words to defend themselves. A sense of fearlessness that didn’t come natural to me, but worked to develop through practice and many experiences. And always appreciated her collaboration with my dad’s endless empathy and kindness. Something I valued so deeply coming from a father figure.

During this trip to Samoa, we sat with the Chief and Chief’s wife of our village, also family members of ours, where they explained the true meaning behind my mom’s name.

The definition being, “the speaker of the people”.

The definition of Outspoken is, “to be direct and open in speech or expression”. To me, the true definition should be, “outspoken is the practice of openly sharing your unique perspective and a key differentiator when paired with wisdom, empathy and kindness”.

Outspoken Management Group being the partner needed to make this definition come true.
